Industrial barge traffic runs continuously along the water, shaping an active transport corridor where long-term residents trade quiet central streets for open towpaths and working docks.

Sobre el lugar
Sobre el lugar

Commercial freight defines the waterway connecting major industrial hubs across Belgium.

The waterway connects Antwerp with Liège, linking the Meuse river directly to the Scheldt river. It also joins the Dessel–Turnhout–Schoten Canal, creating a continuous transport route across the country. Named after King Albert of Belgium, the channel was constructed by German and domestic engineering contractors. Heavy commercial barges use the passage daily to transport raw materials between inland manufacturing basins and coastal docks.

During wartime conflicts, the waterway served as a primary military defense line across the region. Allied forces, including Canadian, British, and American units, mounted crossings over the water during the liberation campaign. Specialized contractors cleared stream siphons and dredged coal harbours linked to regional mines. Today, the canal remains a functional industrial corridor bordered by towpaths rather than a recreational parkway.
