Commercial freight defines the waterway connecting major industrial hubs across Belgium.

The waterway connects Antwerp with Liège, linking the Meuse river directly to the Scheldt river. It also joins the Dessel–Turnhout–Schoten Canal, creating a continuous transport route across the country. Named after King Albert of Belgium, the channel was constructed by German and domestic engineering contractors.
