About the place

A preserved medieval repository of sacred community records anchors historic Fustat.

The congregation in Old Cairo maintained an extraordinary vertical chamber designed to safeguard religious texts and everyday communal papers bearing the divine name. Known as the Geniza Synagogue or the Synagogue of the Jerusalemites, the complex preserves the Well of Moses in its rear courtyard. Historical papers deposited in the elevated silo include rabbinical treatises, poetry, and civic legal records.

Reconstruction following caliphal destruction reestablished the sanctuary as a center for followers of Palestinian rabbinic traditions. Physician and philosopher Maimonides settled within walking distance of the compound, leading the regional Jewish community and leaving personal manuscripts preserved in the archive. Surviving carved wooden ark doors display intricate Mamluk medallions and remain in museum collections.
