Living along the waterway connects you directly to the urban hubs of Salem and Portland, where daily life follows the northward flow between mountain ranges.
The river flows northward through a lowland basin situated between the Cascade Range and the Oregon Coast Range. It discharges into the Columbia River near Portland. The surrounding drainage basin holds the majority of the state population, including administrative and commercial centers that rely on the waterway for recreation and industry.
Indigenous groups, including the Kalapuya, Chinook, and Clackamas, established settlement patterns and land stewardship throughout the basin long before European contact. Lower river communities depended on salmon harvesting, while southern groups applied controlled fires in valley woodlands to maintain gathering grounds and open hunting meadows.
