Residents structure weeknight routines around stage performances alternating spoken dialogue with lyric songs, treating the central lyric theatre as a neighborhood staple rather than an occasional outing.
Architect Jerónimo de la Gándara designed the venue alongside builder José María Sánchez Guallart on the initiative of the Spanish Lyrical Company. Modelled on La Scala in Milan with a classic horseshoe auditorium, the stage was established to present zarzuela, a genre alternating spoken scenes with sung passages. Composers Francisco Asenjo Barbieri and Cristóbal Oudrid helped promote the founding alongside banker Francisco de las Rivas.
Disaster struck when fire consumed the original structure, requiring an extensive reconstruction by Cesareo Iradier that minimized flammable building materials. Maestro Luna directed his orchestra to reopen the hall. Because the central opera house at Teatro Real remained shut for decades, Teatro de la Zarzuela assumed the role of Madrid's premier home for opera and grand recitals, preserving the capital's lyric tradition.
Subsequent renovations eliminated historic ceiling paintings by Francisco Hernández Tomé and Manuel Castellanos, stripping away interior decor before the state acquired the premises. National cultural authorities later broadened the schedule to incorporate flamenco and classical dance. Now protected under heritage status, the theatre retains the Community of Madrid Orchestra as its resident ensemble for revivals like La Gran Vía.
