Artists based around Calle de Alcalá endure relentless street noise in exchange for working alongside historic studio archives.
The institution began under royal decree before acquiring a private palace along Calle de Alcalá. Originally designed by José Benito de Churriguera for the Goyeneche household, the complex underwent substantial reconstruction under architect Diego de Villanueva. Villanueva stripped away the ornate baroque facade to establish an austere neoclassical exterior suited to academic instruction and institutional order.
Today the site functions as both a public museum gallery and the operational headquarters for the Madrid Academy of Art. As a public law corporation integrated within the Instituto de España, it combines state administrative responsibilities with daily cultural access. Long-term residents discover that the building maintains strict scholarly schedules, alternating between silent academic sessions and public gallery viewing.
