Pietro Pardo designed the original stone layout with a cavalier, covertway, and tenaille. The Order of Saint John erected the strongpoint following naval raids to deny foreign fleets uncontested anchorage in the deepwater channels.

The bastion achieved historical prominence during the Great Siege of Malta, enduring sustained bombardment from Ottoman batteries on Mount Sciberras.
