Residents around Bebelplatz trade quiet residential amenities for the continuous traffic along Unter den Linden, keeping the historic theater and its resident orchestra on their regular walking route.
Prussian monarch Frederick commissioned the opera house as the centerpiece of his planned Forum Fridericianum on present-day Bebelplatz. Architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff adapted British Palladian elevations from Stourhead and Wanstead for the exterior facades. The theater opened on Unter den Linden with an opera by Carl Heinrich Graun, establishing an institutional partnership with the Staatskapelle orchestra.
Fire consumed the original structure, prompting reconstruction under architect Carl Ferdinand Langhans. The company presented major musical milestones, including premieres of works by Carl Maria von Weber and Otto Nicolai. Conductor Erich Kleiber later directed the premiere of Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck from this podium, cementing the ensemble's reputation for pioneering modern drama.
Political repression severely fractured the ensemble when the National Socialist regime forced Jewish and dissident musicians into exile, including conductors Otto Klemperer and Fritz Busch. Extensive wartime bombing wrecked the theater, requiring thorough postwar rebuilding in East Berlin. Following German reunification, the company officially revived its historic geographic designation along the boulevard.
