Berliner Mauer: was in der Nähe ist, wie man hinkommt und wann man fährt · 2026

Über den Ort

Concrete segments and preserved watchtowers mark the perimeter that once divided the city.

The barrier encircled West Berlin as a fortified security perimeter erected by the East German state. Its primary role was halting emigration from the eastern sector to the western zones. Guard towers and massive concrete slabs formed a continuous outer perimeter, isolating the western enclave from the surrounding territory and splitting urban neighbourhoods in half.

Beyond the outer walls stood a wide defensive zone designed to stop crossings before anyone reached the border line. This corridor contained anti-vehicle trenches, watchtowers, and nail beds alongside continuous patrols. Remaining memorial sections demonstrate how drastically military infrastructure altered transit routes and municipal development across central districts.
