Über den Ort

The Tuileries Palace stood directly west of the Louvre as the Parisian residence of French rulers until its destruction during the Paris Commune.

Craftsmen producing roof tiles originally operated kilns on this riverbank ground outside the municipal fortifications. Catherine de' Medici acquired these parcels near the Louvre to build a royal residence with extensive grounds. Architects Philibert de l'Orme and Jean Bullant directed early construction, while subsequent work added the long gallery along the river to unite the palace directly with the adjacent royal court.

Architect Louis Le Vau expanded the structure with a theater wing and redesigned the central pavilion, while André Le Nôtre remodeled the surrounding gardens into formal grounds. The court later relocated to Versailles, leaving the complex underused until the Paris Commune set fire to the halls, prompting the eventual clearance of the ruins and opening the grand axial vista that connects the Louvre to modern avenues.
