Über den Ort

Catherine de' Medici established the expansive riverside grounds over former tile workshops to create an Italian Renaissance retreat beside the palace.

The grounds occupy land once covered by medieval tile factories outside the old city defensive wall along the northern riverbank. Landscape designer Bernard de Carnesse initially arranged the enclosed grounds with rectangular compartments, ornamental fountains, a labyrinth, and faience decorations. Royal expansions later added shaded arbors, mulberry tree alleys meant for sericulture, and an ornamental stone water basin.

Royal rulers kept private riding stables and exotic animal menageries on the northern perimeter before revolutionary authorities converted the riding hall into a parliamentary assembly. The park opened to the public in earlier monarchical periods and became a civic gathering space following the revolution. Demolition of the main palace structure opened the grounds toward the historic carrousel courtyard.
