Renters in Břevnov trade downtown noise for quiet walled gardens and regular tram commutes, grabbing monastery beer on the walk home.
Saint Adalbert established the Benedictine community alongside Duke Boleslaus, creating Bohemia's earliest male abbey. Expansion under Duke Bretislav brought stone construction and relics of the monk Gunther. After destruction during the Hussite conflicts, Christoph Dientzenhofer and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer rebuilt the complex in Baroque form, with artwork by Petr Brandl and church frescoes by the Asam brothers.
State forces repeatedly disrupted religious life on the grounds. Following wartime military occupation, the Communist government seized the estate, condemned Abbot Anastáz Opasek in a political trial, and installed state security services. Restoration after the Velvet Revolution restored the buildings before a papal visit elevated the abbey. Today, the revived brewery operates on site under the Břevnovský Benedict brand.
