Residents handling municipal permits or civic council hearings travel away from downtown to Cambie Street.
Civic offices previously occupied space on Main Street near Carnegie Library and later inside the Holden Building. Mayor Gerry McGeer pushed for a dedicated headquarters, choosing the Strathcona Park site on Cambie Street. The choice placed Vancouver city hall outside the downtown core, setting it apart from other Canadian cities. Architect Fred Townley designed the complex with a clock tower and municipal chambers.
Carter, Halls, Aldinger and Company completed the stone structure during the civic Golden Jubilee. The rotunda ceiling incorporates gold leaf sourced from British Columbia mines, while external lock plates and doorknobs carry custom monograms and coats of arms. Outside the entrance, a statue of Captain George Vancouver stands beside ceremonial gifts from the Lord Mayor of London, including a civic mace and an orchard cutting.
Municipal operations expanded through an added east wing, while the main edifice earned formal heritage protection. Structural assessments later revealed that the historic offices could not withstand major earthquake activity. Administrative staff initiated moves out of vulnerable workrooms, dispersing routine municipal employment while city council continues to hold legislative sessions on the property.
