About the place

The monumental municipal hall anchors Burg Square with its late-Gothic stone facade and decorated council chambers.

The municipal hall stands on Burg Square over the site of a former fortified castle jail. Mason Jan Roegiers directed its construction in a late-Gothic style following the destruction of the belfry meeting quarters. The stone exterior introduced systematically positioned window niches that influenced civic architecture across Brabant and Flanders, setting an aesthetic standard for subsequent council halls.

Revolutionary upheavals caused the destruction of the original exterior facade statues, with surviving fragments relocated to the municipal museum collection. Later restoration work by Louis Delacenserie merged the council chambers into the Gothic Hall. This upper space features double-vaulted timber ceilings with carved medallions, accompanied by historical wall murals and monumental stone mantels.
