About the place

Basalt lava blocks enclose the major public collection of modern and contemporary art in the central museum quarter.

The institution originated as an exhibition hall inside an Austrian pavilion structure relocated from Brussels to Schweizergarten under director Werner Hofmann. Later expansion into Palais Liechtenstein in Alsergrund accommodated major loans of Pop Art and Photorealism from Peter and Irene Ludwig. Acquisitions of Fluxus and Nouveau Réalisme works from Wolfgang Hahn broadened the institutional holdings into post-war movements.
