About the place

Palais Mollard-Clary houses the world's largest specialized collection dedicated to planned languages.

Hugo Steiner established the institution as an independent association following discussions at the World Esperanto Congress in Danzig. The initiative drew directly on proposals from Felix Zamenhof, brother of the creator of Esperanto. The Austrian National Library incorporated the collection shortly after its creation under the name International Esperanto Museum. Authorities closed the archives during the annexation period.

Postwar recovery brought the collection back into public view inside the St. Michael Wing of the Hofburg before administrators transferred the holdings to Palais Mollard-Clary along Herrengasse. The facility functions today as both an exhibition space and the Department of Planned Languages. Decades of acquisition have turned the reading rooms into the foremost global repository for interlinguistic research materials.
