About the place

Surviving defensive walls mark the perimeter of an Ottoman bastion dismantled during Soviet urban planning.

Ottoman commander Serdar Ferhat Pasha directed the original fortification work during regional campaigns. Successive seismic tremors repeatedly battered the masonry. Following severe earthquake destruction, Safavid governor Zal Khan petitioned the imperial court for restoration funds. Royal resources rebuilt the damaged bastion alongside the Palace of the Sardars, consolidating military command on the plain.

Another major earthquake ruined the site before merchant Nerses Tairyants purchased the entire compound. Industrial development soon overtook the historic grounds when Tairyants established a brandy distillery across the northern section. Later municipal redevelopment during the Soviet period dismantled the remaining citadel structures. Fragments of the stone defensive perimeter survive today amidst the commercial quarter.
