A monumental research complex anchors the scientific collections of the Smithsonian Institution.

The museum operates under the Smithsonian Institution on the National Mall and maintains free admission throughout the year. Its Neoclassical building arose under the McMillan Commission plan to expand research space beyond the original Smithsonian Castle. The halls showcase comprehensive natural specimens, spanning specialized galleries dedicated to ocean ecosystems, global mammal diversity, and rare mineral gemstones.

Behind the public exhibition galleries, the facility functions as an international scientific base with dedicated research staff and extensive storage. Long-term visiting scholars encounter strict departmental protocols, quiet laboratory corridors, and heavy public foot traffic in the central rotunda. Private philanthropy and congressional funding continue to expand specialized wings without adding visitor admission fees.
