Residents crossing this relentless roundabout learn to navigate chaotic traffic lanes on foot rather than expecting quiet street crossings.
The junction brings together traffic streams from Kralja Milana, Beogradska, Makenzijeva, Svetosavska, Bulevar oslobođenja, Deligradska, and Nemanjina streets. Originally an open marsh drained by the Vračar stream, the terrain was leveled using soil from the nearby hill. Scottish entrepreneur Francis Mackenzie divided the surrounding plots, establishing residential settlement alongside a socialist gathering hall.
Wartime authorities replaced the unregulated intersection with a circular roadway and laid a massive underground drainage trunk. That collector still routes groundwater from the hills of Vračar and Zvezdara down toward the river. These expansive subterranean sewage tubes continue to block modern municipal plans for pedestrian tunnels, forcing daily commuters to negotiate heavy surface vehicular traffic.
The area took its name from an early inn that staged community balls, choral recitals, and theatrical shows. Authorities renamed the junction after socialist thinker Dimitrije Tucović and installed his bronze memorial bust, though the historic title eventually returned. Decades of abandoned remodeling competitions and stalled department store schemes earned the plaza a popular reputation among planners as a haunted square.
