Above the portal, an elevated stone tribune functioned as the official viewing platform for state leaders reviewing military parades.

Pathologist Alexei Abrikosov handled the initial preservation before Boris Zbarsky and Vladimir Vorobiev took over ongoing biological maintenance of the remains. Discovery of mold on the casing prompted the transition to sealed stone construction, while wartime threats to the capital forced an emergency evacuation of the body to Tyumen in Siberia. The biological laboratory maintained continuous care throughout the return.

Joseph Stalin was interred alongside Lenin inside the vault before political reassessment led to his transfer to the adjacent Kremlin Wall Necropolis.
