Residents head into the Jordal basin for winter ice sports because downtown commercial arenas proved too expensive for regular athletics.
Oslo required a dedicated venue without relying on multi-sport grounds, leading politician Rolf Hofmo to choose an old brickyard hollow beside Jordal Stadion. Architects Frode Rinnan and Olav Tveten handled unstable hillside soil by cutting an amphitheatre into the slope. Difficult terrain caused major financial overruns and permit delays before the arena debuted as the inaugural artificial ice rink in the Nordic region.
Figure skater Sonja Henie offered to fund a protective roof, but municipal leaders rejected the gift to preserve the original architectural lines. Leaving the rink exposed forced organizers to contend with shifting winter weather, which eventually compelled the city to finance a covering. Adding the canopy eliminated the stage, converted open standing terraces into seated rows, and established the site as an indoor sports hub.
City planners expected the newer Oslo Spektrum to take over major athletic competitions, but steep operational costs made that downtown arena impractical for league play. Jordal Amfi therefore retained its position as the primary ice hockey venue in town, later adding an adjacent youth rink and modernized technical systems. The facility continued hosting international championship tournaments, boxing matches, and community skating.
