Eye Filmmuseum functions as a national film archive and cinematheque on the northern waterfront.
The institution originated as the Dutch Historical Film Archive through the work of David van Staveren, Felix Halverstad, Piet Meerburg, and Paul Kijzer. After incorporating collections from Filmtheater de Uitkijk, film collector Jan de Vaal took charge as director. Collections moved between Filmtheater Kriterion and Stedelijk Museum before establishing quarters in the Vondelpark Pavilion.
