San Lorenzo fuori le mura unites early Christian shrines and medieval papal architecture into a single complex.
Constantine built the original oratory over the grave of deacon Lawrence. Successive reconstructions under Pope Damasus and Pope Pelagius expanded the sanctuary. Pope Honorius joined a newer basilica directly onto the older church, leaving the nave and triumphal arch visibly misaligned. The complex functions as a parish church and papal minor basilica, historically tied to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

The high altar crypt holds the tombs of Lawrence and Stephen beneath restored frescoes showing their martyrdoms. Below street level, excavations reveal multiple subterranean burial chambers. Popes Hilarius and Pius rest here alongside Cardinal Guglielmo Fieschi, whose tomb reuses an antique sarcophagus carved with a pagan marital banquet. Romanesque stone lions guard the portico decorated by the Vassalletto family.
