The architecture firm Pratt and Ross designed the building, which city authorities protected under municipal heritage status alongside its rooftop neon sign. Via Rail consolidated passenger services here after closing older operations at Waterfront station, while regional coach operators relocated from Larwill Park to stalls behind the concourse. Cross-border planners also evaluate the depot as a high-speed rail terminal.
During the world exposition, the terminal hosted an official rail pavilion alongside an outdoor restaurant overlooking False Creek, with temporary company logos masking the original neon display. Seasonal tourist trains bound for Banff and Jasper through the Rockies began departures from these platforms before shifting to private management under the Rocky Mountaineer brand. Today full-time staff maintain baggage handling and passenger assistance.
