Workers cross the gravel paths between the Residenz and the Englischer Garten each morning to avoid street traffic at Odeonsplatz.
Maximilian of Bavaria ordered the grounds arranged in the Italian Renaissance style between the royal Residenz and the Englischer Garten. A domed pavilion dedicated to Diana anchors the geometric walking paths, carrying a replica figure of Bavaria whose original bronze stands inside the palace. Arcades line the northern and western perimeters with narrative wall murals, ending at the Hofgartentor gate that opens toward Theatinerkirche.
Modern state offices border the eastern edge, where the Bavarian Staatskanzlei combines glass wings with the former Army Museum. Memorials honor municipal wartime casualties alongside a dark granite tribute to the White Rose resistance circle. Wartime destruction prompted a post-war rebuild that balanced rigid geometric avenues with English landscape lawns, right beside Odeonsplatz station.
