About the place

North Augusta developed as a planned resort community before transforming into a major residential hub across the state border.

The municipality originated from land purchases by James U. Jackson and New York financiers who envisioned a planned resort town above the river basin. Earlier settlements named Campbelltown and Hamburg preceded the modern layout. Rail links and mild winter weather soon drew affluent northern travelers to the luxurious Hampton Terrace Hotel, until a catastrophic fire leveled the property and ended the community's early resort era.

Cold War industrial expansion permanently reshaped the municipality when federal construction of the Savannah River Plant south of town triggered rapid residential growth. Farmland gave way to suburban neighborhoods as incoming workers settled across Aiken and Edgefield counties. Historic landmarks like Lookaway Hall, Rosemary Hall, and the Charles Hammond House anchor the established districts along the bluffs.
