Red pandas, freedom, and Snoop Dogg

Letter from September 8th Sender: Anastasia Lebedeva, Vienna International Airport, Austria Recipient: Yulya Keda, Kazakhstan Heyyyyy! Stop being sick! It's warm outside! We'll be there soon! We have tons of time – we're sitting at the airport in Vienna – 6 more hours to wait! Glad there's Wi-Fi! America is behind us, it remains in our hearts and will stay in our memories forever! Four days in New York – not enough to walk around the whole city, but quite enough to remember for a lifetime! So bright, amazing, alive, it gave us so many impressions! We stayed in a hostel in the center of Manhattan, the area is good, right next to the New York City Police Department. (Proof of this is an arrested horse that stood proudly and posed for us). Without wasting time, we set off to conquer New York! Anya, with the look of an all-knowing guide, showed me her favorite places, but every time we discovered something new! How I wish you were here with us! The city streets are surprising: skyscrapers combined with ancient cathedrals, yellow taxi cabs with carriages (in the Central Park area); fountains, lights, and the people – you just can't imagine how many there are, and they are all so different! We were in Central Park – it's like a green island in the center of the metropolis! We wandered around the zoo, hoping to see a leopard, which apparently hid from us( And we also saw red pandas! You would have liked them! We left donations for wildlife protection! It's so great that people here don't ignore that! Believe it or not – we saw Snoop Dogg)) We are, of course, far from his fans, but it's cool! We took photos! It remains a mystery until the end whether it was him or his twin brother, but people were walking around and whispering! Oh well, in the meantime we went to Madame Tussauds and took pictures with Johnny, the Beatles, Elvis, Einstein, and a bunch of other famous people! It's a pity that we were at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for only 2 hours – until closing! Who knew there would be so much to see there? We wandered through the Egyptian halls, saw a mummy, looked into the European painting halls, saw a Rembrandt) And we also saw (or rather, first heard) our compatriots) That reminded us that we will be home soon! Yes, I kept telling Anya, let's go to the Empire State! And she convinced me that it's better to wait until it gets dark, and then the view of the city is the most beautiful! And it's true! Standing at suuuuuch a height (and not scary at all!), you feel like Bruce Almighty)))) How good that I took a new lens! S t u n n i n g shots!!! We managed to buy tickets for a cruise around Manhattan! Stood in line for 2 (!) hours to get on the ferry! But the wait was worth it!!! Statue of Liberty! New York skyline! Brooklyn Bridge! And the guide also showed us where Sarah Jessica Parker and Sacha Baron Cohen live))) But we didn't have time to visit them! Is it possible to accidentally meet an acquaintance in such a huge city? It turns out, yes! In the hostel, we lived with a girl named Sasha from Russia, she came on a tourist visa! So, Anya and I went for a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge, and we thought – if only someone would take a photo of the two of us! And then we look – Sasha is walking! Such a coincidence! We decided to go to the airport by subway – to save money! Remember last year, Anya had to exchange her last euros with the French to pay a greedy taxi driver? )) We thought, we'll take the subway, we have plenty of time, and we did the right thing! And now we are sitting here, and it seems that very little time has passed, but we already miss it so much! The feeling of freedom, independence, when you don't know what the new day will bring! And you return home a little different. Kisses and hugs! Waiting to meet! Not much left now!

Everyone has their own path...

Up until this point, the three of us followed roughly the same path, the same route, but every person is still infinitely lonely, and everyone has their own path that they will walk alone, whether they want to or not. Someone was idling, visiting museums, and reading books. Someone went sailing around Canada. Someone worked, worked, and worked. Since you, the reader, are traveling through my memories, you too will be idling and walking through NY museums on this page...=) If you want to read about the fate of my fellow travelers, just ask.=) A whole month ahead... Why did I decide not to work? To get a job, I would have had to lie a lot and well to everyone, because no one would have hired me for 3 weeks. If I had gotten a job, I wouldn't have had time for books, and my university debts were looking over my shoulder and even pushing me with dissatisfaction for 2 months already. With a job, I would have had less time to explore the city. And in general, I was just too lazy to work. =) It seems like there is enough time for everything, but that is far from the truth. So, dear fans of all things American, to your right is a photograph capturing the entrance to one of the largest museums in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Another tip. If by some miracle you stayed in NY for more than one day, don't put off visiting museums. Don't hope to run past so many creations of human thought in just an hour or two. Plan your museum visit in advance and leave the house even earlier than you would have woken up back home. But I have considered an answer like "Why the heck do I need this museum?"... At 151 West 34th Street, there is a ten-story Macy's. Good luck. _ Don't let the number of different human faces scare you: bearded and wrinkled, chubby and rosy, doubting and impudent. Boldly get into one of the dozen lines. You've heard that "the museum exists on the funds of sponsors and donors with small state support (ha-ha! I'm sure an American museum would cry if its 'small state support' turned into the small state support of a Russian museum)" (Wikipedia is my friend=)), and that means you can enter this temple of human creations completely for free? Believe it, it's true. Just hand any coin to the person handing out "tickets" (it's better to hand over an American one) and smile. They will exchange your coin for a colored badge with the museum's emblem, which you must pin to your clothes (your clothes won't be damaged! see for yourself=)). So, grab a museum map, just in case you need the restroom, and go ahead! To the museum!=)

It's time to say goodbye, or "The world is not a wish-granting factory."

As much as all of us J-1 students would like to extend the summer, it is time to head back home. After all, "Travel is worth it if only to return home afterwards!" Every day I called my parents, and we missed each other. Living with a 7-hour time difference was becoming impossible; I wanted to hug my loved ones as soon as possible and tell them everything about my summer in detail. The last few days were spent buying gifts and summing up the experience. I agree that "Travel is not always pretty. It is not always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that is okay. The journey should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you... Hopefully, you leave something good behind." And I took a lot with me; I changed, became more independent and responsible. When we are so far from home, we begin to appreciate many of the things we didn't value before. And, upon returning, we become different. I realized that all the pleasure in life comes from encountering the new and unknown. Yes, I cannot judge America 100% yet, but I can definitely say that it is not going anywhere. At the end, New York was waiting for me again. I had more time to appreciate all its beauty and the diversity of places. "For him, there were only two favorite moments in life: when he approached a big city and when he left it." I had the opportunity to admire all the splendor of the skyscrapers and the architecture of the buildings themselves. I once again encountered this stream of different people in the huge metropolis. It all started with New York and ended with it. "I haven't been everywhere yet, but it's on my list." You are, of course, wondering what I would change about my trip...? 1. I would book tickets in advance. 2. Now I know what days-off are, and at every opportunity, I would grab a backpack and set off to travel to new places. I would attend all student meetings because it is incredibly cool. 3. I wouldn't have to spend time getting a social security number, but could have gone to The Metropolitan Museum of Art instead. 4. I would have taken more photos of America and organized my own mini-exhibition at my university in Kursk. Describing my summer in America, I wanted readers to get closer to that atmosphere and, together with me, experience and feel everything I felt while being far from home. Participating in this contest brought me back to those wonderful warm days day after day. In conclusion, I would like to express my special gratitude to the International Exchange Center for the opportunity to get to know America. It is thanks to the International Exchange Center that thousands of students from all over the world can discover new countries and make new friends.
