Hollywood Boulevard packs heavy foot traffic right outside the forecourt, making the surrounding blocks noisy for daily life.
Sid Grauman, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks developed the cinema venue after earlier theatre ventures along Hollywood Boulevard. The Los Angeles architectural firm Meyer and Holler designed the building, while Raymond M. Kennedy acted as principal architect. Construction took over a site formerly occupied by a private residence.
The forecourt holds autographed cement impressions left by actors and filmmakers since construction began. Concrete specialist Jean Klossner mixed the durable paving material and supervised the initial dedication ceremonies. Commercial films continue to premiere here, alongside regular screenings in the historic main auditorium.
