About the place

Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium defined professional sports in the city before its demolition cleared space for parking and memorials.

Municipal leaders selected the Washington-Rawson neighborhood for the facility due to its direct access to downtown businesses, the state capitol, and regional expressways. Constructing the circular multi-purpose arena required clearing the surrounding residential district. The completed venue became the dual home ground for the Atlanta Braves baseball franchise and the Atlanta Falcons football franchise.

Beyond baseball and football, the stadium hosted professional soccer matches including championship finals for the Atlanta Chiefs. The field also accommodated major cultural events, including a concert by the Beatles, alongside international baseball matches during the summer Olympic tournament. County authorities altered the official title to include both the city and Fulton County after funding disputes.

Following the relocation of the sports franchises to newer venues, demolition crews dismantled the interior and imploded the concrete framework. Officials converted the cleared land into asphalt parking for the adjacent replacement stadium. Today, the paved lot retains painted markings showing the former field layout, and an outdoor monument continues to preserve the landing point where Hank Aaron struck his landmark home run.
