The collection originated under the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society at Philosophical Hall on Bond Street, whose salvaged stone portico still stands on Park Row. Wartime bomb damage later forced the municipal council to store items or show them in central library rooms. Prominent holdings include the Leeds Tiger, a giant moose skeleton, and a carved wooden cart, alongside reserve materials kept at the Yeadon resource centre.
