Girton College established residential collegiate education for women in Cambridge.

Girton College operates as a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, founded by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon to provide higher education for women. The institution began its teaching away from Cambridge at Benslow House in Hitchin before acquiring land near Girton village. Its founders insisted on parity with male scholars, demanding that female students sit honours degree Tripos examinations.

Early scholars sat classical and mathematical Tripos papers as pioneers, establishing academic parity long before the university granted full collegiate status. The site expanded beyond the initial block to incorporate library facilities, multiple residential wings, and a dedicated chapel. The college later transitioned to admit both men and women, maintaining formal sister ties with Somerville College in Oxford.
