    A contested airfield caught in the buffer zone preserves the sudden halt of commercial aviation across the divided capital.

    The airfield began as a Royal Air Force base before expanding into the primary civilian gateway of the island. A terminal built by Cybarco and designed by West German architects Dorsch und Gehrmann once handled international routes for carriers like Cyprus Airways and BOAC. Commercial traffic ended abruptly when a coup against Archbishop Makarios and the subsequent Turkish invasion turned the tarmac into a battlefield.

Bilateral talks in Vienna regarding shared administration stalled without restoring civilian flights.
