    The airfield began as a Royal Air Force base before expanding into the primary civilian gateway of the island. A terminal built by Cybarco and designed by West German architects Dorsch und Gehrmann once handled international routes for carriers like Cyprus Airways and BOAC. Commercial traffic ended abruptly when a coup against Archbishop Makarios and the subsequent Turkish invasion turned the tarmac into a battlefield.

    Following intense ground fighting, the complex passed into United Nations custody and became the official headquarters of the peacekeeping force on the island. Bilateral talks in Vienna regarding shared administration stalled without restoring civilian flights. The perimeter remains frozen in a demilitarised buffer corridor, where a damaged Hawker Siddeley Trident passenger jet sits permanently abandoned on the tarmac.
