If you are going to San Francisco …

I have a special connection to San Francisco, so to speak. Whenever I hear the name, Scott McKenzie's song "San Francisco" plays in my head. And the lines: "If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair..." I love this city; you know, it's not your typical American city. Yes, it has skyscrapers, huge traffic jams, cool cars—the list goes on forever—but it's different. The people there are different, somehow; they are kinder, they strive for something, they are constantly growing. And the weather, for me, is just perfect. It's +20 all year round; sure, it could be a bit warmer in summer and colder in winter, but that doesn't change the overall vibe. San Francisco reminds me of Italy in some way. I highly recommend visiting the "Palace of Fine Arts"; then you'll understand what I meant. The architecture there is incredible, and the houses around it also look more European. And if you are traveling as a couple, I recommend a romantic spot called "Shoreline Park." It's actually in Silicon Valley, but it's worth it. Most importantly, bring some food and a blanket; I can tell you for sure, there is plenty to enjoy there, especially at sunset. Of course, don't forget the most important places like the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Lombard Street, or Twin Peaks. They are a must-visit. I've been to San Francisco twice; apparently, I fell in love with it so much that I returned a second time. I ended my first trip to this city with a hike to "Lands End," and you know, I had only seen such scenery in pictures on the internet. At that moment, tears involuntarily welled up in my eyes, and I felt very sad that in a few hours I would be leaving. For me, it was the perfect place in every sense. And seeing the waves crashing against the rocks is a mesmerizing sight. On my second visit, I dedicated a whole day to the tourist town of Santa Cruz. It's about a two-hour drive from San Francisco, maybe less. For me, it was like a little Los Angeles—the same palm trees, the same beach. You won't believe it, but the weather was even +35, which is very rare for Northern California. You can get there by car or by bus. If you are traveling with a group, order an Uber or Lyft and go for it; it won't be expensive, but if you still want to save money, the bus is also an option. To be honest, I could go on for a long time because I love this city. I want to keep some places as my personal memories of San Francisco. I advise you to visit the places mentioned above. I promise you, you won't be left indifferent.

Stop 4. San Francisco

This year, I wanted to burn San Francisco to the ground and rebuild it from scratch. An unjustifiable amount of money, effort, and most annoyingly, time, was wasted. You should only come here with a car; otherwise, you risk losing all your energy and motivation on the steep street climbs. The sun scorched my skin and burned out my mood. Besides sleeping, I wanted nothing! Only my and Tema's love for sunsets kept us moving. And that was the best memory of the city. Then we reached an island of peace and beauty - Sausalito. Yachts and mountains visible through the fog, wine, and food. What else do you need? But we were waiting for the moment we could finally escape. Beautiful views and the whole idea no longer brought us joy. That's why, this time, I realized that I will only return to the surroundings.

Conditions of the expiration date of J1 visa allowed me to stay in US extra 30 days but I was planning to take the plane back to Russia on 15th of September because my closest people had their birthdays this month, my girlfriend was getting married and my study had already got started. During my staying in US I was texting with a guy from my hometown that left it for living in LA. He knew that originally the only dream I had about US was San Francisco so he bought tickets for both of us on Grayhound from SF to LA. Despite all this important events I had at home I considered to delay my departure to follow my dream. Maine is the most northern state on the west coast on the border with Canada so it’s pretty far from the east coast of California, where I had to be to take this bus. Anyway we found apartments in San Francisco on airbnb, all green with two dogs, garden and hot tab on the roof. I’ve never seen him before so I had some flowers in my hair that we can recognize each other. As I figured out then he had never though about this song so he decided that I am crazy about flowers. We spent three days walking up and down hills of San Francisco , talking about everything in the way that we knew each other for long. Hi Alex! I spent couple days hiking in National Parks. I didn't write you earlier because I turned off all electronic devices to be free from technologies and closer to nature. We went there through Utha, first national park that we've visited was Bryce, trails ran through mountains, called hoodoos, it's odd-shapes pillars of rock, they look extraordinary because of nature forces and erosion, and it could be imagined, that mountain rage forms fantasy castles, in the splendid and magnificence of this canyon you could feel the reminiscent of the passage of time. Its massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink and red soared to the sky. They were sun burnt and looked like deserts or Mars. On our way to the next national park we chose the wrong serpentine road, nature was so different, autumn has already came there so all trees were in fire. Second place that we've been was Zyon National Park, But the filling of this park was full of life because of the emerald mountain creek flowing down the slopes to the Virgin river. It waters soil and mountain feet are very green. Poplars with silver leaves are so tall there. In our trip we reached the place called Angels Landing.

10 reasons why I love San Francisco

Letter from September 4th Sender: Anastasia Lebedeva, San Francisco, California Recipient: Yulya Keda, Kazakhstan Hi! Honestly, I thought I'd write sooner, but I didn't have the time – we spent 3 unforgettable days in San Francisco! Now I understand why Anya wanted to come back here so much! The city is just indescribably beautiful! That's how I put it))) Its whole charm is that it's very different from other American cities! I don't even know where to start! I have an idea! Let me write about why this city is so wonderful instead! 10 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO 1) The best way to get to know any city is just to walk wherever you want, ON FOOT! There are no huge highways in San Fran, so you can walk and enjoy the views as much as you like! Of course, the city is built on hills – so the roads take on unimaginable angles! 2) It really is very beautiful! I took tons of photos! The coolest thing is that the city is beautiful in its diversity! Palace of Fine Arts (especially in the evening when it gets dark, the view is stunning), City Hall, Painted Ladies, Japantown, Chinatown, Union Square (a cool square), Haight-Ashbury (a very positive neighborhood)), Coit Tower, Pacific Heights.... 3) You can spend the whole day walking around Fisherman’s Wharf: the embankment, the deep blue ocean, Alcatraz Island, the sound of the waves, seagulls circling over the water – probably one of the most beautiful places in the city! 4) Cable Cars! OMG! After waiting in a huuuuge line, we managed to ride the famous little trams! We specifically took the side seats so we could stand while riding, take photos of people along the way, and enjoy the views!!! An amazing feeling! 5) The city is full of surprises! We spent half the day on the embankment, and by the time we rented bikes, it was already 5 o'clock. Our goal was to cross the Golden Gate Bridge! Anya had talked our ears off (yours too))) about how much she likes this bridge and how many photos she took last year! So to say I was anticipating it is an understatement! But imagine our surprise when we reached the bridge, or rather, the place where it was supposed to be, and discovered that THE BRIDGE WAS GONE!! We were standing in the middle of nowhere (as Americans say), and there was FOG all around, so thick that it was impossible to see the Golden Gate Bridge! After wandering around a bit, we decided to go through with our plan anyway! We rode across the bridge (yes, we found it by touch))), our hair was wet from the fog, it was windy, but we felt great! White haze all around! Anyway, after reaching the other end, we stopped and started sharing our impressions. And when the sun came out and the red outlines of the bridge supports became visible, we took pictures, and, tired but happy, continued our journey. On the way back, we bought t-shirts - I biked the Golden Gate Bridge! The day was a success! 6) Golden Gate Bridge! No words! It's the symbol of the city! 7) It has its own atmosphere here! Probably because of the architecture! Or maybe because of the weather! Fog is a very common occurrence, but it's so cool here in the fall! 8) Golden Gate Park. Everything is so beautiful, green, tons of flowers! Tons of photos! 9) Every time you can find something new: cozy cafes, museums (we managed to see a bit of Dali and Picasso), bookstores, parks, people! 10) You want to come back here again and again! p.s. The flight to New York is soon – we'll be there tomorrow, and on the 8th we fly home! So we'll be back soon! p.p.s. I like your VK status)))))))

Cali trip [8] - San Francisco

The next day, out of habit, we packed our bags, said goodbye to our star, and headed to San Francisco around 10 o'clock. It was a 6-hour drive from LA. We chose a different route that runs along the ocean coast—it is California, after all. We didn't choose it in vain; the road is truly beautiful, just like the state itself. In San Francisco, we arranged to meet an old acquaintance of mine who has been living in Washington state for a year. For this occasion, he specifically traveled to California, spending 13 hours one way. As I mentioned, we hadn't planned our trip beyond LA. So, we intended to get a room in an inexpensive motel and all stay there. Two of his friends were supposed to come with him, so the motel would be quite cheap for us. Since he arrived in SF before us, he was tasked with finding that very affordable motel in the center. And he found one. He paid 100 dollars for a room with two beds, which easily fit 7 people. So, we arrived in SF in the evening, met up with Sergey, settled into the room, and went for a walk together. To be honest, we didn't really see much of SF. We just walked around a bit in the evening and then returned to the motel. And then, in the morning, we went to see the famous red bridge and Alcatraz prison. But only from the shore. My impressions of San Francisco are somewhat neutral. Maybe because we spent so little time there. It's cool in principle, but very cold, and there are many hills, which are difficult to drive on with a manual transmission car. We said goodbye to Seryozha and went our separate ways—he went home to Seattle, and we headed back to the Atlantic Ocean. Goodbye, California… We will miss you… See you again.

Cali trip [7] - LA 2

Day two. So, we had one more day left in L.A. We spent the first part of the day on our car. The thing is, one tire had worn down from the long drive, and we needed to replace it urgently. We decided to go to the Mexican district and find an inexpensive repair shop there. Analeigh, as always, left somewhere in the morning, leaving us alone. While my brother and I went to fix the car, the girls went shopping somewhere. Since we were staying right in the center, the shops were close by. So, we went to the Mexicans to change the tire. We found a place to do it without any problems. They changed one tire for us for 20 dollars. After that, we wanted to go shopping. We went to our girls who were at the Beverly Center – a large clothing supermarket in Beverly Hills. Analeigh was there too. Since the prices were quite low for California, we decided to buy some things for ourselves and spend some time there. After 2 hours, I realized that I had already spent 300 dollars on clothes and decided to call it quits. I picked up my brother and the girls, and we went to Santa Monica beach one more time, and then home. At home, Analeigh invited us to go out for dinner in Hollywood. Of course, we agreed. We decided to take our car, since so many people wouldn't fit in Analeigh's car (it was a huge mess in there). I got behind the wheel. To be honest, it was a bit difficult for me to drive around Los Angeles; it's a very big city after all. Everyone was cutting me off, honking at me, and I was nervous. And here I was, having volunteered to drive us all to Hollywood. On the way, I almost hit other cars twice, to which Analeigh reacted completely calmly. We had dinner at a pretty decent retro restaurant in the center of Hollywood, near the Walk of Fame. Analeigh paid for all of us, even though I asked her not to. But the bill was quite small – about 100 bucks. Later, when we were already returning home and standing at a crosswalk, some people recognized Analeigh and asked her if she acted in movies. She replied that yes, she does. It felt so good to know that we had a Hollywood star sitting in our car, even if she was just starting out. That's how our stay in L.A. ended. There was very little time, very little. Later, my brother and I went for a night walk around downtown and went to sleep, as we had to drive further to San Francisco in the morning. Los Angeles, like any other big city, has its drawbacks. But it was very pleasant to drive on roads that I had previously only seen in movies.

San Francisco

Once upon a time, when I was still very little, I loved singing along to the famous song “if you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair” and I didn't even dare to dream back then that one day I would actually end up in San Francisco... see the Golden Gate Bridge with my own eyes, walk along the narrow streets, and ride the cable car... But life very often brings unexpected surprises, and here I am in the city of my dreams! Ah, San Francisco! Walking along these narrow streets, climbing up and then rolling down the hills, is a huge pleasure! There is so much to see here besides the Golden Gate! In San Francisco, you will find the oldest Chinatown in America, where you can sit in a Chinese restaurant or buy cheap trinkets and souvenirs. Also, be sure to find the neighborhood where the hippie movement began, where walking along the narrow streets you can meet many unusual and interesting people, stop by a coffee shop, or just relax to the sounds of reggae drifting from a window. In San Francisco, definitely take a walk through the park, which, if I'm not mistaken, is larger in area than Central Park in New York itself. Buy a coffee at Starbucks and take a leisurely stroll through the cozy streets lined with Victorian-style buildings. And of course, don't forget to visit Alcatraz! The island where the famous prison stands is very beautiful in itself; it's worth taking a tour just for the views that open up from it. And the prison... I still get goosebumps when I remember Alcatraz... A creepy place, but it draws you in somehow... It's worth stepping into a cell for just a couple of minutes to start appreciating all the joys of life and freedom again.
