Long-term residents head to Casa de Campo when central streets feel suffocating, using the paths around Madrid Zoo Aquarium for weekend breathing room.
The complex stands inside Casa de Campo as one of the largest zoological parks in Spain, combining outdoor terrestrial habitats with an aquarium. Although the municipal government of Madrid retains ownership of the grounds, international entertainment operator Parques Reunidos manages daily operations. The institution remains globally recognized as one of the rare zoological parks to house giant pandas.
Madrid relocated its historical animal collection from Parque del Buen Retiro, where the original Casa de Fieras once displayed species from Asian and American territories. Moving the modern facility out to Casa de Campo allowed the park to expand far beyond its historic royal boundaries. For long-term residents, visiting the zoo means leaving the dense urban core behind and heading into the city's largest woodland public reserve.
