About the place

Ptuj Castle crowns the ridge above the town, recording feudal fortification and aristocratic transformation.

The fortress originated as a defensive stronghold against Hungarian incursions while the settlement answered to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. Jesuit administrators from Zagreb later held the property before financial difficulties prompted its sale to Walter Leslie, an imperial military commander of Scottish birth. Leslie oversaw extensive reconstruction during the Baroque era, stripping away purely defensive battlements.

Conversion into a rural manor established the complex as the administrative center of a substantial landed estate. Ownership remained with Leslie descendants until family lines ended, passing next to the House of Dietrichstein and subsequently to Countess Theresia von Herberstein. The Herberstein family retained the property until postwar nationalization converted the private aristocratic estate into a public monument.
