About the place

The National Museum of Serbia anchors Republic Square as the oldest and largest museum institution in Belgrade.

The institution occupies an academic structure originally constructed for the Uprava Fondova financial house on the former grounds of the Dardanelles tavern. Designed by architects Andra Stevanovic and Nikola Nestorovic, the edifice integrated reinforced concrete foundations over historic basements near the old Stambol Gate. The facade combines neo-Renaissance geometry with neo-Baroque domes above the central and lateral blocks.

Before securing its permanent home on the central square, the museum moved between Captain Misa's building, private residences, and royal palaces. An interwar wing and atrium designed by Vojin Petrovic expanded the bank premises before wartime bombing destroyed the central dome. Following postwar reconstruction, the collections settled permanently into the restored halls and former banking chambers overlooking the square.
