Tenants settling near Kalemegdan share their daily routes with the citadel perimeter around the animal enclosures, balancing quiet mornings against heavy weekend foot traffic at the park gates.
The grounds, known locally as the Garden of Good Hope, sit inside Kalemegdan Park as a publicly owned zoological sanctuary. Mayor Vlada Ilić opened the park through personal donations, though wartime aerial bombardments subsequently leveled enclosures and killed much of the livestock. Sculptor Vuk Bojović later took charge as director, resisting hotel redevelopment and introducing rare white lions and great apes to rebuild the institution.
City planners repeatedly drafted proposals to move the animal enclosures to suburban districts like Stepin Lug or Jelezovac to free up fortress pathways and uncover lower citadel ruins. Because the institution remained in the fortress instead, everyday park traffic intersects with delivery trucks and enclosure gates. Long-term residents in adjacent blocks hear exotic wildlife calls mixed with downtown trams and endure dense citadel foot traffic.
