About the place

Steel railway arches carry daily life between Novi Sad and Petrovaradin across the reconstructed crossing.

The bridge spans the river to connect central Novi Sad with Petrovaradin, carrying both vehicular roadway lanes and international railway tracks. Designed by Aleksandar Bojović and erected by an international consortium, the tied-arch structure relies on paired steel arches rather than the prestressed concrete of the original crossing. Rail transport shares the deck with motor vehicles, linking the domestic network directly toward Hungary.

The original crossing bore the name of Yugoslavian engineer Branko Žeželj and stood until the air strikes of the NATO bombing campaign brought down all major river crossings in town, including Varadin Bridge and Liberty Bridge. A provisional crossing sustained traffic for years amid repeated delays before the current steel arches were joined. Today the span restores the severed rail corridor between Belgrade and Subotica.
