Museum of Saint Helena: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026
Lower Jamestown confines daily life between steep volcanic slopes and the sea, so newcomers soon make the foot of Jacob's Ladder a regular landmark for meeting neighbours and catching coastal air.
Old stone walls beside the Atlantic shelter artifacts recovered from open ocean waters.
The collection occupies a historic stone power station at the foot of the Jacob's Ladder stairway in lower Jamestown. Managed by the Saint Helena Heritage Society, the institution relocated from Broadway House after outgrowing its original quarters. Governor David Hollamby officiated the opening to mark the anniversary of the island's discovery. Inside, galleries present maritime relics salvaged from ocean shipwrecks.

Beyond naval artifacts, exhibits document local military and social history alongside a dedicated gallery for temporary displays and a small bookshop. Along with Longwood House, where Napoleon Bonaparte stayed while detained on the island, this site forms the core of local historical research. Future development plans aim to incorporate the adjacent PWD Stores structure to establish a cultural centre with shared archives.
