About the place

Giacomo Quarenghi designed this Palladian complex as an imperial academy before revolution remade it into the nerve center of Soviet authority.

Catherine the Great decreed the creation of an institute for noble maidens under Ivan Betskoy, establishing the country's pioneering formal school for women. Giacomo Quarenghi designed the Palladian structure near the Smolny Convent, borrowing a name derived from the historic resin manufactory on the site. An early parterre garden and ornamental iron grille still enclose the grounds where noble daughters once lived under royal patronage.

Vladimir Lenin converted the school into Bolshevik headquarters during the October Revolution, directing state actions from its rooms until the central government moved to the Moscow Kremlin. The complex later saw the assassination of Sergei Kirov and the rise of Vladimir Putin during his service under Anatoly Sobchak. Today the building serves as the working seat for the regional governor alongside an intact museum of Lenin's assembly hall.
