About the place
About the place

Chesme Church stands as an extraordinary example of striped pseudo-Gothic architecture constructed to celebrate a naval triumph.

Court architect Yury Felten erected the memorial sanctuary beside Chesme Palace along the historical route toward Tsarskoye Selo. Empress Catherine chose the staging ground where dispatches first confirmed the naval defeat of Ottoman ships in Chesme Bay. Foreign monarchs witnessed its initial ceremonies, including King Gustav of Sweden at the foundation and Joseph of the Holy Roman Empire at the consecration.

The complex underwent drastic transformations following the revolution, operating as a forced labor camp and later functioning as a storage facility. Wartime shelling caused structural damage while an aviation technology institute occupied the grounds. Careful municipal restoration revived the original masonry, allowing naval museum displays before the Russian Orthodox Church reclaimed the altar for daily services.
