Red Gates: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026

Residents treat the site as a transit interchange rather than a monument, navigating the eponymous metro station while the vanished baroque gates remain strictly an archival memory.

About the place

Baroque triumphal arches once punctuated the imperial procession route, leaving behind only an underground station and an expanded urban square.

The monument originated as a commemorative portal for imperial coronation processions moving between the Kremlin and Lefortovo Palace. Architect Dmitry Ukhtomsky translated the earlier wooden arch into permanent stone, establishing a baroque landmark defined by blood-red exterior walls, snow-white reliefs, gilded capitals, and provincial coats of arms. A trumpeting angel statue stood at the summit above the gateway.

While comparable triumphal portals vanished across the capital over time, this arch stood as the sole remaining example of its kind before municipal demolition crews dismantled the stone structure. A wide public square replaced the enclosed surroundings, yet the monument continues to anchor daily navigation through an underground metro station that preserved the historic name for modern commuters.
