About the place

The Old Stone Mosque anchors the district with centuries of communal worship and memory.

Local tradition marks the grounds as the burial site of soldiers who defended Kazan, commemorated by a large boulder before the eastern facade. Merchant Gabdulla Utamishev funded the stone building, while scholar Ghabdennasir Qursawi aligned the qibla. Architect Alexander Schmidt rebuilt the facades in classicist forms, placing a tiered minaret over the central roof to reflect the ancient towers of Bolghar and Kasimov.

Leadership of the congregation rested with the Amirkhan family of imams before Soviet regional authorities ordered the building closed. The interior halls served as a secular school and later as a warehouse until the state restored the complex to religious use. Today the building functions as an active parish where daily worship continues, offering long-term residents an enduring community hub rather than a museum attraction.
