Sobre o local

Executive authority concentrates in the West Wing, where administrative offices operate alongside presidential decision rooms.

Theodore Roosevelt moved executive offices out of the family residence into a dedicated workspace built over former greenhouses and stables. McKim, Mead and White handled the construction to separate household life from government business. The building began as temporary working quarters, placing the chief executive alongside staff before later expansions permanently covered the former presidential tennis court.

Workers excavated workspace beneath the lawn and added an upper storey to maximize floor area. Architect Eric Gugler relocated the Oval Office to the eastern side, connecting it to the residence along a covered portico where presidents transit shielded from reporters and staff. Narrow corridors and compact offices remain, leaving most administrative personnel in the adjacent Eisenhower building.
