Sobre o local

Cathedral Square centers on the Kremlin bell tower, which anchors the skyline and rings for the adjoining cathedrals.

The structure stands in Cathedral Square as the tallest belfry inside the Kremlin complex, designed by an Italian architect to serve the nearby Assumption, Archangel, and Annunciation cathedrals because none possessed dedicated belfries. Grand Duke Vasily commissioned the monument to honour his father over the foundations of an earlier stone church. The building operates as part of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.

Beyond its liturgical role, the tower functioned as a watchpost against municipal fires and approaching military forces. Multiple belfry levels allowed sound to carry across the settlement. During the foreign invasion led by Napoleon, troops targeted the cross on the dome under the mistaken belief that it was cast from pure gold. The gilded iron cross resisted military tools until local intervention finally lowered it from the summit.
