Important tips. Part 1:

Some boring important tips. Part 1: Travel: 1. After hearing the cherished "I approve your visa. Have a nice summer," hurry up and start looking for tickets on all websites. Search everywhere the internet suggests, but don't forget to check reviews! As a rule, the earlier you buy your ticket before departure, the cheaper it is. Buy tickets to major cities (New York, Washington)—whatever is closer to you. From big cities, there are tons of buses to various places in America, which is much cheaper than a direct ticket to your final destination. It's logical. 2. Ticket bought. What's next? No, not to the mall for summer clothes. Where are you going after you land? How do you get there, and what is the best/cheapest/safest way? Open the great Google and ask how to get from the city where you land to the one where you will spend your summer. Here are a few bus websites: https://www.megabus.com/ http://yobus.com/ https://www.greyhound.com/ http://www.luckystarbus.com/ 3. Always keep unforeseen situations in mind, so when planning, add 2-3 hours just in case. It's better to wait a bit than to act in a cold sweat. My example: I flew Ufa-Istanbul-New York. Turkish Airlines were the cheapest at the time. New York JFK – New York Manhattan – about 1-2 hours. Have a New York subway map with you. New York – Boston – Megabus 4 hours. Very comfortable double-decker bus, free Wi-Fi, AC, power outlets. But: Arrive early. It's a very popular company, so seats fill up quickly. New York – Boston: The second time I used the Chinese bus. Luckystarbus – not as comfortable as Greyhound and others (no outlets), but almost the cheapest. Boston – Portland (Maine) – Concord Coach 2 hours. The most convenient: outlets, free Wi-Fi, AC, you watch cool movies on the way. P.S. If your layover between flights lasts more than 6 hours, you can safely ask the airline to provide you with: if it's night, a hotel stay + food; if it's daytime, an excursion + food. In my case, the layovers lasted about 23 hours. The result: a free tour of Istanbul and an overnight stay in a 5* hotel.

The Captain's Tale. Part 21: Couldn't stay at home

Since my boss is currently on his way to California, sitting at home for 2 weeks is dull, especially since he didn't leave me any money or work. So, the captain decided to finally fulfill a long-held dream of traveling around America. That sounds too pretentious. It's more like cruising around nearby cities. It took 4 days just to decide on the mode of transport, destinations, and routes. In the battle for the title of "Cheapest Travel Operator," megabus.com won. Since I didn't have much money left, but wanted to visit many places and see a lot, the final route is: New York – Washington – Philadelphia – Boston – New York. The costs were: NY – Washington $21, Washington – Philadelphia $5, Philadelphia – Boston $1, Boston – NY $13. Total - $40. It took another 2 nights to plan the routes. The biggest route is obviously Washington, since 90% of all museums and such are free there. I need to visit 21 places in one day. Philly – 7, Boston – 5. Day 0: New York (29.08.10) As usual, these kinds of trips start with you leaving the house loaded with bags, thinking, "Why couldn't I just stay home?" My first bus to Washington is on August 30th at 1:15 AM (an hour and a half left, so I'm sitting at Penn Station, typing while I have nothing to do). I had to leave home at 3 PM to make it to B&H for a tripod for my camera. No one is going to photograph me except myself. While riding, I was obviously thinking, "What am I going to do with a bunch of junk in Manhattan for 8 hours?" I took the tripod and headed to Times Square to sit, put the tripod in its case, and throw away the box. It's a day off, so it's crowded as usual. But then I stumbled upon an event: right next to the stairs, there was a van with a large screen installed on top, playing some clips, and speakers were set up too—basically a mini open-air cinema. So I crashed there. It was about 6 PM. While I was messing with the tripod, they started playing some short films, and I had nothing to do anyway, so I just sat and watched. Then I realized it was some kind of film festival, and it wasn't just American short films (honestly, I couldn't even recognize the language). Between films, they kept playing ads for New York filmmakers. When the next film started, it was immediately clear it was shot in New York, and the beginning was so engaging. In the middle of the film, I realized it was a feature-length movie, the headline film of today's festival. "Listen to Your Heart." A dramatic story about a waiter who fell in love with a girl from a wealthy family who turned out to be deaf-mute; well, as usual, the girl's mother is against the relationship, and all that. At the end of the film, the girl had surgery that allowed her to hear and speak, and the guy died of cancer. It might seem like a banal plot, but the film is so well-directed and very touching. Again, halfway through the film, I noticed that all the actors were walking right next to me—it was a premiere screening. The guys got a round of applause at the end, and everyone was taking photos with them for another 10 minutes, including me)))). So the time flew by quite unnoticed, and there was an hour left until the bus. I looked at those buses—I wish we lived like that. Real tourist double-decker buses, not like ours. Oh well, we'll see.

Part 5. Travel

Well, the time has come for the final part of my story. First, I'll tell you about my travels after finishing work, and then I'll summarize both the blog and my trip, deal? By the way, a very important point. Don't forget the day your work visa expires! I forgot, and told my manager I was staying for another week, so she managed to make a new schedule. This time her angry look in my direction was justified x). My forgetfulness also had a few other unpleasant consequences. First, I didn't have time to properly plan my trip and did it... the night before leaving. Second, I lost a few days of precious time because I could only get my paycheck after the weekend. Third, as I already said, booking transport tickets on the last day is, damn, expensive! Considering that it's almost always possible to negotiate with an employer, it's better not to step on my rakes. Transport terminal in Buffalo, from here I left the metropolitan area where I spent the last 2.5 months. If I got to Niagara by Amtrak, then for my mini-trip I decided, first, to save a little, because some railroad fares really make your heart skip a beat, and second, their transport network isn't very flexible. I used Megabus and Greyhound. There were troubles with both. The former were almost an hour late (though we arrived on time anyway), and they didn't handle luggage very well. The latter... arrived too fast! And I wanted to sleep on the bus longer! I'll also say that it's much more cramped on the bus than in a train car. Anyway, I got a bit carried away, let's get back to my route. From the transport center in Buffalo, I took a Megabus to Washington with stops in a few other cities. I'll make a remark again about the local pronunciation of cities. Americans call Philadelphia by the affectionate, as it seemed to me, word "Philly" x). I arrived in Washington during the day, so I immediately dropped my things off at the hostel (although they checked me in before the check-in time, and that can happen) and set off on foot to the center, checking out various interesting places marked on Google Maps along the way. Here, another mistake of mine as a novice traveler comes into play, let it be revealed only in New York. Walking around the city almost aimlessly is definitely cool, but in the end, it turns out not to be quite efficient. Washington is amazing, I imagined it to be much more boring, but it's interesting even just to walk around it, looking at the whimsical architecture. But in exchange for that, I didn't really have time to go through the museums, which saddened me. By the way, if you are a night owl like me, I have bad news for you. The opening hours of museums here are even shorter than shops, until 5-6 PM. So adjust your schedule in advance, I just slept through everything. Essentially, out of my one and a half days (I arrived by noon and left the next midnight) in Washington, I managed to walk around the entire memorial square (the first day minus walks around the city and the next evening were spent on this), walk around the center, and go through most of the Air and Space Museum. I also ran through the American History Museum, but I had less than an hour for everything, which is unforgivably little. Capitol. Yes, just like in the movies. Washington Monument. There are many free and cool museums all around it. Summarizing regarding Washington: Wake up as early as possible, especially if you want to get into museums (you can even get into the Capitol); Plan your route more carefully so you don't walk in circles. I walked around the White House area twice because I couldn't find it x); Don't skimp on public transport, it will save you a lot of time. By the way, I haven't talked about it yet. For starters, a fun fact - in Washington, the subway is, suddenly, "metro", not "subway". But it is famous for its confusing fares. My technical education wasn't enough to understand when and how it's more profitable to ride it, mostly because a fixed amount was always dedu

How to travel around the USA by bus on a budget

How to travel around the USA by bus on a budget Today I would like to tell you about three bus companies that will help you save a lot of money and travel across the USA in almost any direction. Greyhound Lines So, the largest and oldest company is Greyhound. And yes, I hate it, sorry. The thing is, when I lived in a small town in the West, the only way to get to San Francisco or LA was Greyhound. I have already written about how a bus from this company left without me, but that's not all. There were drunk drivers, buses delayed by 5 hours, and a case where I arrived at the station at 10:20 AM as stated on the ticket, but the bus had left at 10:00 AM, etc. But I would like to believe that I was just unlucky. Greyhound buses run between Greyhound bus terminals and partner terminals. For example, in Sacramento, the bus does not arrive at the main terminal, but at a specially built Greyhound terminal, which is located in a far from convenient place. This is not always the case, but it is worth considering. The buses claim to have power outlets, Wi-Fi, and restrooms. Outlets and Wi-Fi are a lottery. Overall, the buses are quite comfortable, and traveling in them, if we are talking only about the buses, is quite convenient. I advise buying tickets online on the website. You don't need to print anything. To save dollars, I recommend checking the company's Instagram before buying, as there are sometimes discount promo codes. Also, when I had no money, I registered a new account on their website to get a 10% discount. Peter Pan Bus Lines Peter Pan Bus (PPB) is a bus company popular on the US East Coast. Those who are going to Cape Cod, be sure to write down or remember this company! I remember how I got from Boston to Hyannis for the first time: I opened Google Maps and, as it said, bought tickets for $40 to Hyannis. A couple of days later, I found out that I could have gotten there on PPB for $7. Alas. The company is excellent - good buses, cheap prices, they run almost on schedule. In general, I recommend it. To save money, you can also register new accounts and buy tickets on the website. Megabus Megabus is a company known for its super discounts. When agencies talk about how people traveled across half the USA for $10, they are talking about Megabus. In general, this is an English company, and it appeared in the USA only in 2012. Buses run on popular routes and, mainly, between large cities (which is very different from the first two companies). Therefore, I am almost sure that you will get to know Megabus when you go traveling or when you are going from New York somewhere. I traveled from Boston to Washington, and from Washington to New York. If I'm not mistaken, I spent about $20 on tickets. I didn't really like the buses back then - they are double-decker, the legroom and the aisle between the seats are designed to accommodate the maximum number of people, so they are cramped. There was Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and power outlets. That's it. But, considering the ticket prices, all these disadvantages become not very significant. Therefore, I recommend it. Tickets must be purchased in advance, as it will be cheaper.

Boston and the first steps home

The trip to Provincetown was our last trip on Cape Cod. There were a few days left before our main trip along the US East Coast. We decided to follow this route: Boston - Washington - New York. We bought the cheapest tickets we could find, and two companies helped us with this: Peter Pan bus and MegaBus. So, for a ticket from Hyannis to Boston we paid $5 each, and for a ticket from Boston to Washington about $30. In Boston, we decided to stay for one full day, as we had already been there when we flew to Miami; in Washington we had 10 hours, and in New York three days. Arriving in Boston, we faced a problem with our suitcases. They were very large and heavy, and the luggage storage at the bus station was very expensive and only worked until 10 pm (our bus was at 0:00). We started looking for another way out and accidentally stumbled upon an ad at some newsstand at the train station that they accept luggage for storage. The kiosk is located near the escalators in the main waiting room. The prices there turned out to be much more reasonable and they worked around the clock. Leaving our things there, we bought a 1-day subway ticket and went for a walk around Boston. Our first stop was Harvard. We were very lucky, and on the day we were in Boston, student meetings were held at all universities, where the leadership read congratulatory speeches in a solemn atmosphere, and some universities were open to visitors. Arriving at the "Harvard" station, we immediately headed to the main building. It was very beautiful, an orchestra was playing, everyone was in formal attire, parents had arrived, students were meeting and laughing. There were a lot of teachers who, by the way, turned out to be very friendly. The atmosphere of celebration and joy was felt in the air. There was no arrogance from the students, and everyone we asked was ready to take a minute and help. Unfortunately, we never got into the university, as they only let people in with passes, but this in no way spoiled our mood and we were very happy that we visited this beautiful place. The university itself is located in a park surrounded by a fence, so entering the gates, it feels like you are entering another world. Students sit with MacBooks on the grass under the trees and discuss something, someone is slowly riding a bike, someone is running and barely holding their open backpack, guys are arguing about solving a problem - in general, a complete immersion in student life. But leaving the university and the park, you do not leave the area of numerous "Harvard" signs that are found at every step. On the opposite side of the park is the official university store, selling "Nike" sportswear made specifically for the university, casual clothing with branded merchandise, books by famous graduates, pens and other school supplies. The prices are not very cheap, but the average J-1 student can afford it. The quality of the clothes depends on the price. In addition, there are numerous unofficial shops where Harvard merchandise is also sold, but, admittedly, ordered from Aliexpress. The prices here are significantly lower, but the quality is a complete disaster, so I do not recommend it. Of course, there are a huge number of different bars, restaurants and other establishments aimed at students nearby. After visiting Harvard, we headed to another world-famous educational institution - the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Unlike Harvard, it is not located as conveniently. We arrived at the subway station closest to the main building, from which, according to maps, a shuttle to the university was supposed to run; after waiting for it at the stop for 15 minutes, we decided to walk. The university itself is 20 minutes from the subway, and the path to it runs along the beautiful Boston waterfront. It is really very beautiful there: boats with MIT logos are in the water, people who have gone for a run are constantly running along the embankment, someone is sitting on a bench and just

Getting ready for a little trip:)

It was already August. Two whole months had passed. That was when I decided with the girls that it was time for us to take a break) We took 3 days off in a row and started thinking about how and where we would go. Initially, we wanted to go to Washington-Springfield-Boston. But then we decided to swap Springfield for Philadelphia. One evening, sitting at Dunkin' Donuts and sipping coffee, we started making plans for our trip. After weighing all the pros and cons, we came up with a plan. The closest big city to us was Boston. Tickets from Boston to Washington were cheap. Tickets from Hyannis, which is 15 minutes away from us, were more expensive. The thing is, there is a website where tickets are really very cheap. But you can only book from a major city to a major city. Here is the site: https://us.megabus.com/ So we decided that on Sunday we would work until 5, take a taxi, and head to Boston at 6 PM. We were supposed to be there around 8 PM. In Boston, we planned to transfer around 10 PM and travel until morning to Washington, then around 11 PM, get on and go from there to Philadelphia. It's not far from Washington to Philadelphia, so according to our plan, we should have been there around 3 AM. Then at 10 PM, we were supposed to get on a bus and go to Boston. We were supposed to arrive in Boston in the morning and stay there until the evening. In the evening, take the last bus and get home. Thus, we got the following picture: 1) On Saturday evening, we get on the bus and arrive in Boston around 8:00 PM (before getting on the bus, we had to get to the city where it departs. We lived in West Yarmouth, and the bus was from Hyannis. That's 15 minutes from us) 2) At 10 PM, we get on the bus and go to Washington, arriving there around 7 AM on Sunday 3) The whole day in Washington, and at 11 PM we leave for Philadelphia, where we arrive around 3 AM, or even earlier, on Monday 4) The whole day in Philadelphia, and at 10 PM we get on the bus to Boston, where we arrive at 8 AM (around that time) on Tuesday 5) The whole day in Boston, we get on the bus around 9:00 PM and arrive home around 1 AM (Tuesday night to Wednesday). Route: West Yarmouth - Hyannis - Boston - Washington - Philadelphia - Boston - Hyannis - West Yarmouth Having decided on the route, we decided to book the tickets. Most of the tickets were bought on the site I mentioned earlier.) The tickets cost us a total of about $180. As you noticed, there were no hotel stops in our plan) That was the first thing we saved money on. We slept on the buses and that was enough for us))) You will learn more about how it was as I continue my story about the trip) After we chose the cities, we started studying what to see in them.) We wrote down the places in the order we wanted to see them. We made the list as optimally as possible (i.e., if two attractions are close by, see them together, rather than going to the other end of the city to see something else and then coming back). We wrote down the name of the place, the street it's on, the subway station, and the approximate time we planned to be there. I advise you to do the same. It will save you time. Write down every little detail. It's clear that there will be some mishaps, but by planning, you will reduce their number) And so, having written down everything to the smallest detail, we started getting ready for our trip)) We packed all the essentials) We took a change of clothes that we planned to walk around in, dry shampoo, cosmetics, money, passport, tickets, and personal hygiene items. And we dressed warmly for the road because, as I said earlier, it's cold on the buses( The day finally came. It was August 8th, Saturday. We went to work and waited with excitement for 5 PM, when we could run to get our things and head out on our trip:)
