A former military fortress now shelters the primary historical records and national heritage of Costa Rica.

The complex was originally built as quarters for soldiers and served as army barracks. During the Costa Rican Civil War, combat units occupied the compound as an active defensive position. The institution moved into this hilltop fortress following the armed conflict. Today the former military installation stands on Cuesta de Moras in San José, converted entirely to civilian educational use.
