Long-term researchers on Cuesta de Moras navigate a former military stronghold every day, balancing downtown noise with immediate access to national historical archives.
The complex was originally built as quarters for soldiers and served as army barracks. During the Costa Rican Civil War, combat units occupied the compound as an active defensive position. The institution moved into this hilltop fortress following the armed conflict. Today the former military installation stands on Cuesta de Moras in San José, converted entirely to civilian educational use.
Inside the former barracks, the galleries preserve historical records covering significant events, political developments, and national tragedies. Key exhibits feature heritage items including the memorial of Glory alongside foundational civic paperwork. Long-term researchers encounter detailed documentation of how the republic took shape, preserved within halls that once quartered garrison troops.
