Residents treat the outdoor plaza as an everyday meeting ground, where summer screenings and festival crowds reshape daily pedestrian routines around the avenue.
Soviet authorities cleared the ancient church of Saint Paul and Peter to make room for the cinema building, designed by architects Tiran Yerkanyan and Gevorg Kochar. The venue debuted with the landmark Armenian sound film Pepo and later underwent structural redesigns by Kochar and Telman Gevorkyan. Relief carvings on the facade depict memorable scenes from national cinematic works such as Sayat Nova, Chapayev, and David Bek.
The complex contains several indoor screening halls alongside an open-air theatre on the eastern facade. Operating as the primary stage for the annual Golden Apricot International Film Festival, the facility draws international industry delegations and local cinema enthusiasts to Charles Aznavour Square on Abovyan Street. The surrounding plaza functions as an active civic gathering point during festival runs and evening releases.
